The Artisan at Work: Tiamtree and the Korean Black Persimmon Carved Vase
Some objects stop you before you understand why.
— a recognition that arrives before you begin your analysis, before the questions about material, maker and price. This is what happened when I first saw Tiamtree's work. I understood that it belonged in Narrated Home before I knew anything about the woman who made it. And then I learned her story, and the object became more of what it already was.
This is the rarest thing a piece of craft can do.
THE MAKER - TIAMTREE
Tiamtree is a Korean woodcarver working from her studio in South Korea.
Her background is in furniture-making — a discipline that teaches you to work with wood as a structural material, to understand its properties through the demands of function. In 2019 she made a decision to leave furniture behind and dedicate herself entirely to carving — to work with wood not as structure but as subject.
The shift changed everything about her practice. Where furniture-making requires wood to conform to the requirements of the object being built, carving in Tiamtree's hands works in the opposite direction. The wood leads. The carver follows — removing material slowly, piece by piece, until the form that was always inside the wood becomes visible.
This is not a metaphor. It is a description of her literal process. Chisel in hand, fragment by fragment, she carves until what remains is what the wood was always going to be.
THE MATERIAL - KOREAN BLACk PERSIMMON
The Tiamtree Carved Vase is made from Korean black persimmon — a wood whose particular character comes from a process that takes decades and cannot be engineered or accelerated.
Black persimmon develops its distinctive dark mineral patterns from within the living tree. The patterns form as the wood ages — minerals moving through the grain over years, creating the deep, dark markings that give this material its singular appearance. No two trees produce the same patterns. No two trees produce them at the same depth or density. The wood that Tiamtree carved for this series is, by her own assessment, of a quality she does not expect to encounter again.
This is the material fact that changes everything about how you look at this piece. You are not looking at a wood that was chosen for its beauty, though it is beautiful. You are looking at a wood that chose itself over decades — and that Tiamtree was present to work with at the precise moment when that conversation could happen.
After this series, it cannot happen again with this material. That is not a sales claim. It is the maker's own honest assessment of what she has worked with and what she is unlikely to find in quite this form in the future.
THE PROCESS - CARVING AS MEDITATION
Tiamtree's practice is described on the Narrated Home Artisan Spotlight page as meditative — and that word is doing specific work here that deserves unpacking.
Meditation, in this context, means that the process cannot be hurried. The black persimmon demands the same slow, deliberate approach as its own formation. You cannot force this wood. You remove fragment by fragment with a chisel, reading the grain as you go, following the direction the material wants to travel. The natural openings that appear in the finished vase — the spaces where the wood opens — are not carved. They were always there. Tiamtree found them and left them.
This is the single most important thing to understand about this piece. The openings are not a design decision. They are the wood's own history, revealed through the patience of the maker who was willing to find them rather than fill them.
The dimensions — 13.5 × 13.5 × 14 centimetres — make this a desk piece, a shelf piece, a piece that lives within reach. Small enough to hold. Heavy enough to communicate that something significant went into it.

Every object in the NH edit passes three tests. Does it have a story? Does it earn its place in a room? Is it made to last?
The Tiamtree Carved Vase passes all three with a conviction I have not encountered in any other piece in the current collection.
The story is very special — not because it has been written to be, but because the facts of the material and the maker are genuinely singular. A named artist. A named wood. A specific geological process. A finite quantity. These are not talking points. They are the truth of what this object is.
It earns its place in a room in the way that only objects with genuine presence earn it — by changing the quality of any surface it occupies. Place it on a shelf and the shelf becomes different. Place it on a desk and the desk has a reason to exist. The natural openings create shadow play as the light moves across them through the day — morning light behaves differently from afternoon light, and the piece responds to both.
And it is made to last not just physically — which it will — but aesthetically. Black persimmon aged over decades to become what it is. The vase carved from it will age with the same patience. In twenty years it will look exactly right. In fifty it will look more right.

I have been building the Narrated Home collection since the brand launched and I have never written a founder's note for a product that felt adequate to what I was describing.
This piece comes closest to making me feel that way again.
At first sight it moved me. That is not language I use easily or often. Up close, you appreciate every painstaking hand-carved detail — the decisions that were made and the decisions that were surrendered to the wood itself.
This is what we mean when we talk about provenance. Not a country of origin on a label. Not a material name in a product description. A specific person, a specific material, a specific moment in which they met — and the object that exists because of that meeting.
At £550, this is the most significant investment in the current NH collection. It is also the most irreplaceable.
